Dr. Susan F. Meikle Memorial Fund

Dr. Susan F. Meikle passed away in Amarillo Texas on 1 August 2022. Born in Albuquerque, NM, 16 September 1960, along with a twin brother, she was the eldest of seven. Susie graduated from Del Norte High School in 1978, a top student, member of the honor society and homecoming court, winning the State championship twice in tennis.

Susie graduated from the University of Denver in 1982, earning an MD, University of Colorado, in 1987. With residencies in emergency, newborn care, obstetrics, gynecology, and preventative medicine, board certified at the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology for most of her professional life, she earned a Public Health Master’s Degree, University of Colorado, 1993, and a Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, University of Texas, 2017.

Susie worked in hospitals in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, joining the CDC and NIH, as an epidemiologist/Medical Officer, rising to Senior Scientist, Program Director at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. Susie authored or coauthored 66 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including, “Prevalence of symptomatic pelvic floor disorders in US women,” which was cited over 1100 times in medical literature. Susie consulted in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Acoma-Canoncito-Laguna Health Services Unit in New Mexico; as a palliative care physician in Amarillo she helped hundreds during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Susie was on the editorial board for the Journal of Preventing Chronic Disease, receiving the National Institutes of Health Award of Merit, Honorary Membership in the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons; she was listed among the “Top Docs” in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in Amarillo Magazine in 2019 and 2020.

Susie traveled professionally in the U.S., also Europe, Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and Australia, and vacationed in France, Spain, Great Britain, Norway, and Italy. Susie enjoyed her poodles Lulu and Babou, gardening (tomatoes and sunflowers), book club, cooking, and being a real “Fairy Godmother.” Her kindness and generosity were legendary. Susie is survived by her mother Frances, family members Maggie, Barbara, Catherine, Andrew, George, and twin brother William, as well as many nieces and nephews, particularly Nina and Alexander.
